The Office of Libraries & Archives is mandated to preserve Papua New Guinea’s history documentaries, promote access to information, and support knowledge development for national growth.
Our core functions include the acquisition, preservation, and management of archival records and published materials of national significance. Other functions include:
- Initiate, buildings and monitoring public and institutional library services in PNG
- Promoting literacy and a reading culture
- Providing reliable information services to Government agencies, researchers, students, and the wider public and strengthening records management practices and advancing digital preservation to ensure long-term access to information.
These responsibilities directly support the implementation of the Medium Term Development Plan IV (MTDP IV) by contributing to human capital development, improving access to education and knowledge resources, strengthening public sector performance, and promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
OLA’s mandate also aligns strongly with the Reset 50 Agenda, which calls for renewed focus on nation-building, cultural identity, institutional reform, and sustainable development as Papua New Guinea passed its 50th year of independence.
Preserving national records and promoting access to knowledge enables citizens to understand their history, value their identity, and actively participate in shaping the country’s future.
As Director-General of OLA I will ensure the upgrade our digital library and archives systems, strengthen partnerships with stakeholders and expand access to library and archival services nationwide. That information is user- friendly and accessible to all Papua New Guineans.
