Our Mandate and Governance
The Office of Libraries and Archives is responsible for:
- Building and maintaining the national collection of books, records, and publications.
- Supporting public, school, and community libraries throughout PNG.
- Preserving government documents and national archives.
- Promoting reading, literacy, and lifelong learning.
- Providing access to information for education, research, and national planning.
- Advising on record management and information policies across government agencies.
Mandate
The Office of Libraries & Archives Services is enacted through the decision 31 of 1993, which is the provision of the National Library & Archives Act 1993.
Governance
The Office of Libraries & Archives Services is governed by the Minister of Education and the Board which oversees the Director General who is the agency head.
